The Light Eaters

Town Hall by Bottaccio

DoubleMoon’s inaugural project brings together four connected elements: an exhibition exploring light and perception in Town Hall’s Salon; a three-day presentation of Phillip Vermeulen’s Chasing the Dot light installation in Town Hall’s spectacular Vision Hall; an installation of Chris Levine’s major laser work Higher Power, and a symposium of artists, neuroscientists, philosophers and researchers working across consciousness studies and psychedelic science.

This exhibition in The Salon traces a lineage of artistic practices that employ light as a medium for affecting the mind, exploring how artists have anticipated questions that are now at the forefront of neuroscience and consciousness studies. A number of these artists began treating light as an active psychological and perceptual medium beginning in the 1960s.

At a moment when expanded consciousness and psychedelic experimentation were reshaping ideas about the mind, figures such as Brion Gysin, Liliane Lijn, Amanda Feilding, and James Turrell explored how flicker, rotation, optical phenomena, and altered sensory conditions could transform conscious experience. Their work proposed that art could function not simply as an object to be viewed, but as a catalyst for perceptual change and a means of expanding or recalibrating the processes through which we experience reality.

This dialogue continues through the later work of artists including Loie Hollowell, Leo Villareal, and Tomás Saraceno whose practices encourage viewers to become aware of vision as an active, embodied process. These works draw attention to how art is not simply experienced within the gallery space, but within the physiology of the eye and the interpretive activity of the brain.

Philip Vermeulen: Chasing the Dot

For the opening weekend, Philip Vermeulen’s Chasing the Dot takes over Town Hall’s Vision Hall. Created for DoubleMoon, the immersive dome installation pairs a horizonless field of precisely choreographed light with spatial sound, generating open-eye hallucinations that go to the fundamentals of human perception. Vermeulen’s work builds on scientific research into hallucination and synaesthesia, translating these phenomena into large-scale installations. He represents a new generation of artists using light not only as an aesthetic material but as a means of probing the architecture of consciousness.

Presented with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Chris Levine: Higher Power

Projected into the night sky and visible across London throughout the opening weekend, is the latest in Levine’s series of high-powered aerial beam works, most recently shown during the opening week of the Venice Biennale. This rendition projects a matrix of lasers oscillating at 432Hz — one of the sacred Solfeggio frequencies associated with harmony and healing.

Higher Power is supported by Peyote

Symposium

Speakers and audience sit together inside Philip Vermeulen’s Chasing the Dot for one of the world’s first immersive symposiums on consciousness, co-programmed by Michael John Harris of Town Hall and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst of DoubleMoon. Each talk will begin with a live sitting of Philip Vermeulen’s Chasing the Dot immersive artwork. The talks will then take place within the artwork itself, creating a fully immersive experience.

SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER

The Technology of the Dreamer

Opening keynote with Elio D’Anna

The symposium opens with a keynote given from inside the artwork. Elio will share insights from his studies into how everything we experience in life is a direct reflection of our states of being, and how ‘reality’, in all its horrors and wonders, may be nothing more than a magnificent projection of our inner world.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

The science of a self

Your brain has never seen the world. Sealed in darkness, it builds the room you are sitting in and the person you take yourself to be. This conversation asks what the science shows about how experience is constructed, and which parts of the problem remain unsolved.
With Professor Katerina Fotopoulou (University College London) and Dr Pedro Mediano (Imperial College London).

Altered States

Hallucination, meditation, psychedelics and perception

Psychedelics can dissolve the sense of self, stretch time and redraw the edges of reality. If a molecule can do that, how fixed was ordinary experience to begin with?
With Dr Claudio Agnorelli (Centre for Psychedelic Research, Imperial College London), Dr Anjali Bhat (Lecturer in Psychology and Psychedelics, University of Exeter) and Cosmo Feilding Mellen (co-founder, Beckley Psytech).

The Doors of Perception

Artists at the limit of perception

Artists have always built instruments for seeing differently. Some now work with light and sound tuned to the nervous system, others with machines that produce images of their own. What separates work that changes how we perceive from work that is merely spectacular? With curator Kathelin Gray, creative AI curator and researcher Luba Elliott, and artist Liliane Lijn.

In Conversation with Chris Levine: Stillness Is a Portal to the Divine

Artist Chris Levine with Dr Deirdre Parsons, Executive Director, David Lynch Foundation UK

A conversation exploring how light can transform perception, draw us into stillness, and open the door to deeper states of awareness and creativity.

Chasing the Dot: General Admission

See Philip Vermeulen’s immersive light work without booking a talk. The last showing starts at 6:45pm. Entry is free: choose general admission when you register.

From Off to On: Philip Vermeulen

Book launch and signing in the Salon

The day closes in the Salon with the artist whose work the audience has been sitting inside. Philip Vermeulen launches his first monograph with neuroscientist Professor Timo Torsten Schmidt of Freie Universität Berlin and curator Kathelin Gray, followed by a book signing and drinks.

SUNDAY 18 OCTOBER

Brave New Minds

Psychedelic therapy is moving out of the laboratory and into the clinic, while meditation has been reshaping minds for far longer. What does each actually change, and for whom?
With Keith Abraham (Heroic Hearts UK), Dr David Erritzoe (Imperial College London), Dr Elena Antonova (Brunel University of London) and Dr Grace Blest-Hopley, chaired by Michael John Harris, Town Hall’s Director of Programming.

Chasing the Dot Live

Philip Vermeulen

Philip Vermeulen plays live with the lucid phenomena of the installation, joined by neuroscientist Professor Timo Torsten Schmidt of Freie Universität Berlin, who will explain what we are seeing and sensing, and why. Not for the faint-hearted!
